Vice President JD Vance publicly blamed the eight-month US-Israeli war with Iran
for Republicans’ crushing midterm losses, marking a rare open rift with President
Donald Trump just days after Democrats seized control of both the House and Senate.

In a lengthy post on X the morning after the November 3 elections, Vance wrote that“
the reason we lost is the war” and challenged supporters to argue whether “losing
the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it.”

He noted that Trump himself had acknowledged the conflict’s role and referenced
private advice to end the fighting as “sound.” The remarks followed months of Vance’s
private skepticism toward the campaign, which began with U and Israeli strikes in
late February 2026 aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Gulf targets and disrupted shipping
in the Strait of Hormuz, driving up US fuel prices and living costs.

Trump responded that Vance was “largely” correct about the electoral impact but
defended the war as necessary, saying he would “do it again” and that Iran must
not be allowed a nuclear weapon. He has left open the possibility of further strikes,
while Vance has pushed for diplomacy, including outreach to Iranian officials. Analysts
view Vance’s break as an early move to distance himself from the conflict ahead
of a potential 2028 presidential run, even as Trump has publicly accepted the criticism
without rebuking him.

The Telegraph highlighted the developing split with a timeline graphic of the relationship’s
fraying over the course of the war.

Democrats flipped multiple Republican strongholds, including Senate seats in Texas,
Kansas, Ohio, Iowa, and South Carolina, in a result widely attributed to voter fatigue
with the war and its economic effects.
