The body of KM Tahsif Souri (also referred to as Tahsif Sauri), a 28-year-old former flight lieutenant of the Bangladesh Air Force, was recovered from the Turag River on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, a day after he went missing.

River police from the Tongi outpost recovered the body near Rajabari Ghat (also described as the Tongi Bandar Ghat / Uttarkhan area) around 4:30 pm after receiving a report through the national emergency helpline 999.

An inquest was prepared, and the body was sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka for an autopsy.

Souri lived with his family in a flat in Sector 18 of Uttara and went missing on Tuesday, October 27. His father’s name is KM Enayet Helal.

His identity was confirmed from an iPhone and wristwatch found with the body. He was reportedly wearing white trousers/pyjamas and a black shirt at the time of recovery.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and will be confirmed after the autopsy report. Efforts were underway to establish the circumstances of his disappearance and death; as of Thursday morning, no case had been filed in connection with the incident in some accounts.

Souri had drawn public attention in connection with a video purportedly showing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving Bangladesh by aircraft on August 5, 2024. He was reportedly the person who recorded the footage and/or first shared it on social media. The Yunus-led army-backed interim government sent him to forced retirement in the same month.

Intense discussion and rumors have circulated on social media regarding who allegedly abducted him and who, when, how, and why he was allegedly killed.

In 2025, Jamaat-funded newspaper, the daily Amar Desh, labelled Souri as a RAW agent.

In related developments, police recently arrested two former army officers, stating that they had been assisting with efforts for Sheikh Hasina’s return.

Separately, many current and former military officers are being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal; they are described as pro-Awami League and opposed to Jamaat and Islamist groups.

Following events on August 5, 2024—when the army captured power—numerous officers, including Souri, were reportedly sent on compulsory retirement, many were placed under surveillance, and some trials began that the accused’s lawyers and the Awami League have claimed were initiated under Jamaat’s influence and constitute a farce and illegal proceedings.
