The Bangladesh Awami League has sharply criticized the BNP-led government, alleging that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman the country has become an “economic disaster zone” marked by gas and electricity shortages, soaring LPG prices, and official indifference.
In a post on its official X account on October 31, 2026, the party wrote: “No Gas. No Electricity. No Shame. Under Tarique Rahman’s watch, the BNP government has turned Bangladesh into an economic disaster zone. When people cry out over impossible LPG prices and market inflation, the regime’s response is simple: deploy the police.” The statement further claimed that “extortion thrives, factories die, and the public suffers while rulers play politics,” and demanded that the government “deliver relief or step down.”
Accompanying the post was a graphic image showing a suited figure resembling Tarique Rahman seated atop a red LPG cylinder. Bold text declared “FUELING THE CRISIS” and “LPG PRICE HIKE,” while a lower banner listed “NO ELECTRICITY, NO GAS, RISING LPG PRICES, SKYROCKETING MARKET PRICES, MILLIONS UNEMPLOYED, EXTORTION, BRIBERY, SYNDICATES, FACTORY SHUTDOWNS.”
The attack comes as Bangladesh continues to grapple with a severe energy crisis that has driven up LPG and fuel costs, caused load-shedding, and strained households and industry. Independent reporting has documented persistent LPG shortages, with 12 kg cylinders selling well above official rates, alongside higher import bills linked to regional geopolitical disruptions affecting LNG supplies. Government officials have outlined measures including increased domestic exploration, additional floating storage units, and renewable expansion, while stating that full stabilization could take up to two years.
The Awami League, which governed for 15 years before the 2024 political upheaval that brought the BNP to power, has used the energy shortfalls and related economic pressures to accuse the current administration of mismanagement, reliance on security forces to suppress dissent, and failure to protect ordinary citizens and businesses. The post has circulated under hashtags including #FuelCrisis, #Bangladesh, #BNP, and #StandWithThePeople.
