An already acute gas shortage across Bangladesh is set to intensify as the Summit LNG Terminal will suspend operations for three days starting 4 November for emergency maintenance.
Petrobangla announced on Sunday (1 November) that the terminal, located at Maheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar, will halt regasification activities from 8:00 am on 4 November until 4:00 pm on 7 November. As a result, daily gas supply to the national grid will drop from 920 million cubic feet (MMcf) to 600 MMcf — a reduction of 320 MMcf per day.
The state-run corporation said the temporary shortfall may cause low pressure in residential areas, CNG filling stations and other sectors across the country. Petrobangla expressed “sincere regret” to consumers for the inconvenience.
The country is already facing a persistent gas crisis in households and industries. Officials noted that similar maintenance work was carried out at the same terminal last December. Separately, the Excelerate Energy LNG terminal remained closed for an extended period earlier this year due to mechanical problems. In addition, several scheduled LNG cargoes were cancelled, and newly approved importers failed to deliver shipments on time, further tightening supply and pushing up the price of LPG cylinders.
Petrobangla has urged consumers to bear with the temporary disruption while the maintenance is completed.
